DePuy Lawsuit

In August of 2010, DePuy Orthopedics, which is owned by Johnson & Johnson, issued a recall of 93,000 defective ASR hip replacement systems after reports that the devices have a high rate of failure. A large number of people who received the devices have reported feeling so much pain that they often have to undergo further surgical procedures to correct problems caused by the devices. Side effects of these defective hip implants include pain, grinding, metal shavings being released into the body, and complete joint failure.

Depuy lawsuits have been pursued by patients who have experienced complications from the metal-on-metal implants including severe hip pain, loosening of the replacement joint, and hip failure. As stated above, many of these complications have required additional surgery. The manufacturer recently paid out millions of dollars in settlement of claims by consumers with Depuy ASR hip implants. It is believed that these payments and lawsuits represent only a fraction of the total number of people affected by the recalled Depuy ASR hip implants.

DePuy ASR Hip Recall

Shortly after the introduction of their ASR Hip Replacement System in 2005, DePuy Orthopedics began to receive complaints from patients of problems and complaints associated with early hip failure. The device can fail after only a few years, resulting in painful complications and complicated corrective surgery. Complaints received by the FDA regarding the ASR hip system increased sharply between 2006 and 2009, with over 600 reports of failing implants between 2007 and 2009. DePuy Orthodontics finally agreed to recall the units in August of 2010. Individuals who have received a DePuy ASR hip are advised to contact a Depuy attorney, and a surgeon for evaluation.

Problems with the DePuy ASR Hip Replacement System

The DePuy ASR hip resurfacing system has been popular among patients who wanted an alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery. It has never been approved for use in the United States, but it has been used abroad. It is believed that it is difficult to implant the hips at the proper angle thanks to a design flaw, making them prone to failure. Small metallic particles could also cause inflammatory reactions that can damage the surrounding tissue and bone.

The ASR Hip Replacement System was introduced by DePuy Orthopedics without adequate testing and research. As a result of the negligence of DePuy Orthopedics thousands of people may be at risk of complications. These people may be entitled to financial compensation as DePuy Orthopedics was apparently more concerned with profits than with the safety of their consumers.
